Strictly Legal: Things you absolutely need to know about Canadian law ReviewThe more I read about politics and government, the more I realize the importance of law and of average citizens (like myself) understanding the laws of the land. While most of us have neither the time nor inclination to study the ins and outs of the law, a book or two on the basics would be a good start.
Strictly Legal serves as a good primer on Canadian law. The author, Michael Cochrane, has been practicing law in Ontario, Canada, for 20+ years and is also the host of a TV show by the same name as the book title.
After a brief explanation of Canada's justice system, the book breaks down into chapters containing 10 commonly asked questions about different aspects of the law (e.g., estate, family, criminal, business). As Cochrane himself says, "This book is not legal advice. It is not a legal encyclopedia. It is some legal information designed to penetrate the wall going up around justice. Justice should not be mysterious. It should be understood." (p. 206) The book is not necessarily applicable for Quebec residents (p. 7) and Cochrane warns throughout that many of the laws he explains vary from province to province.
Without question, the reader will find some parts of the book boring. But if a section is particularly applicable to your life, it will prove to be quite helpful. For example, I along with my brothers recently acquired a piece of property through inheritance. Cochrane has some good information on real estate law as it relates to property shared among siblings.
