Collecting Stamps Would Have Been More Fun: Canadian Publishing and the Correspondence of Sinclair Ross, 1933-1986 ReviewDaughter-father duo Jordan (BA'93) and David Stouck collaborate to edit the personal and professional letters of Canadian literary icon Sinclair Ross. Jordan Stouck teaches at University of British Columbia Okanagan, while David Stouck (SFU professor emeritus) has written a biography of Sinclair Ross "As for Sinclair Ross" and edited a collection of his criticism "Sinclair Ross's As For Me and My House: Five decades of criticism" both published by University of Toronto Press. He has also written a biography of another celebrated Canadian writer, Ethel Wilson, "Ethel Wilson: A critical biography", and he is currently researching the life of architect Arthur Erickson.
This new collection includes letters from Ross to other writers and literary figures, as well as many of their replies to him. It highlights the growth of Canadian literature during a crucial period, as well as the development of Ross's career.
As the title, "Collecting Stamps Would Have Been More Fun", makes clear, Ross's life was not an easy or a happy one. His first novel, "As for Me and My House", was published in 1941. Although it was not first well noticed, it became a standard text in university English courses starting in the early 1960s, and Ross is now credited with influencing generations of Canadian writers. The title comes from one of his letters in which he talks about a lifetime of struggling for recognition.
