Then She Learned To Fly ReviewThe writer of this book is of my generation, boyhood in the 40's on to teenage years in the 50's. All this in a small, rural, mostly farming community. In high school he falls in love with a beautiful girl a few grades behind, and they start a passionate sexual affair. When he finishes school, he has to find work, and jobs are limited. He goes into banking, and his descriptions of the mind-numbing, low paying bank jobs at the time is splendid. He's posted from the home town to various tedious places and,is distressed being away from her. She's on his mind incessantly, what's she doing, is she faithful? Her parents detest him and want the attraction to end. That doesn't help. His conflict with them is peculiar perhaps to the 50's, when parents still believed virginity was important even though their own pasts wouldn't stand too much scrutiny.
He gets back to her every chance he gets, but the separation begins taking its toll. They both eventually move to a larger city, he tries to keep the affair going but it's evident it's not working. It reaches the point where he's so obsessed it's stalking, and he embarrasses himself. Her job brings her into contact with entertainers, where she eventually meets and subsequently marries a country music singer, and moves far away. There is now probably a jealousy factor and the envy of her moving far beyond their simple country roots, into a brightly lit country music world. She was once his, after all.
He continues banking and suffering. Eventually meets and marries a young woman, and they start a life together in a small coastal town. He takes over his father-in-law's business. They have children, do the family things: camping week-ends, trips abroad, but this first love lingers. Everyone ages. His teenage love divorces the music star, and moves back to the small hometown. He contacts her.
He's now at that dangerous age of an older man looking back over his life and dwelling on what might have been. A time when there were still dreams, and a future with hope. Now what he has is all there's ever going to be. Obviously a threat to any marriage, and given the right time, the right mood, the right sunset, whatever, this threat could become a reality. They want the past back. She asks if he wants to go to bed. He wisely turns her down. This is what probably saved the valuable life he already had. He continues to see her then comforts her when her life is threatened and she needs a friend more than anything.
Fine descriptions of his own small town, Details of boyhood, teenage angst, heartaches over separation, longing for the past, and maturing into a decent husband and father eventually, all well rendered.
My only minor pick is that some of the dialogue seemed stilted, and the teenage conversations didn't quite hit the mark as I remember it from those years. Those of us growing up in that era should find this book bringing back many memories. Then She Learned To Fly OverviewTHEN SHE LEARNED TO FLY is a love story having nothing to do with airplanes. From early childhood, Mark Bedford has believed that someday, something will happen to him that will be the most amazing event ever; in fact he is sure of it, but has no clue as to its nature. Then, in his last year of high school he meets beautiful Lisa Ross, and is certain that she is the long-awaited gift that will change his life. And so, a childish belief becomes a passionate love affair lasting four years, until tragedy strikes, made worse by a foolish act of Mark's, and they part.Filled with regret, Mark makes every effort to win her back but with no luck: Lisa has begun to try her wings, meeting many men, and eventually marrying Texas Bobby Law, a country singer, with whom she moves to Nashville. In time Mark marries Kate, a pediatrician, and they settle in a community on the coast of B.C. where he operates a hardware store, yet thoughts of his first love will not leave his mind. So much so, that after Texas Bob's early demise he contacts Lisa and they meet when she holidays in the old hometown.Lisa is warm toward him and they spend a day together, although Mark senses that things are not quite right and returns to his wife with more questions than answers.Years pass and the platonic affair between the former lovers continues, until Lisa contracts a potentially fatal disease. With Kate's full knowledge, Mark visits Lisa, who has moved back to their hometown, until she tells him one day that their breakup years before had been based on lies. When she tells him she has recovered from her illness, Mark decides to end the non-affair because it is driving him crazy, so he sends a nice card to her saying goodbye. As it turns out, even her recovery is suspicious, when he receives a call from a friend of Lisa's telling him of her situation. THEN SHE LEARNED TO FLY ends with Mark making some startling discoveries about himself and the things he has believed since the days of love and passion with the girl who changed his life.
