From Quaker to Upper Canadian: Faith And Community Among Yonge Street Friends, 1801-1850 (Mcgill-Queen's Studies in the History of Religion) ReviewYou can't assume that just because your parents, grandparents and g. grandparents are a particular religion that some of your ancestors didn't start out as Quakers, particularly if your ancestor went from the US to Canada but you can't find them as a UEL (Loyalist). I have been having enormous difficulty breaking through a brick wall in my genealogy on one particular ancestor. I couldn't find any birth or marriage records in the Anglican archives in Kingston which would cover the many Protestant religions in the 1800's in Canada. I could find nothing in the Protestant records in the USA or Canada. He's not in Catholic records in Canada. I ran across a comment on a message board that many Quakers became members of other religions later in life during the 1800's because they or their parents were "disowned" (kicked out) and that you have to go directly to the Quaker archives to find the B/M/D records--but what is available? Where do I look? There were so many references in this book of particular sources! It's a gold mine. There was a violent revolt of a small band of Quakers (very un-Quakerly which got them disowned) and many landed in the Gaol (jail), so I found where to search prison records. I have so many sticky tabs and highlighted pages of what records to check out on my trip to the Quaker archives in Toronto. Even if it turns out that my ancestor was not a Quaker, I am learning so much about all of the religious schisms in Canada and the US in the 1800's which answers why on every census he was a different religion. I found this book by going to Google Books and searching under "Quaker" and then searching within the book for my ancestor's surname and the places he lived. While I haven't found my one ancestor specifically in the book, I may have found his parents. I am compiling a list of sources that the author used for when I visit the Quaker archives in Toronto. Great book.
