Alert, Beyond the Inuit lands: the story of Canadian Forces Station Alert ReviewAlert was a base built on the shore of the arctic ocean. Its located about as far north on land as its possible to go. It was also historically a very secret base because of its role in communications interception.
The base had its orgins around the end of the second world war when the US began planning a series of weather stations spanning the high arctic. The site that would become Alert was surveyed in 1946 after the US established a station at Thule in 1946. In 1948, a convoy of US Navy ships was sent into the arctic ocean to establish Alert. The ships couldn't make to their ultimate destination (Cape Columbia) because of ice so Alert was established at the last good position the ships could reach.
Its a useful book because its probably the only thing about the station thats ever been published. But its not perfect in that it was commissioned originally by the Canadian armed forces. The problem with that is that the author can't really touch on certain subjects. It has 48 pictures of the station at various phases of its history.
At its peak, the station had 200 people. But automation and the end of the cold war means that by 2001 the staff of the station was down to 50.
The book is interesting because Alert was for many years the northernmost inhabited location on the planet. There is much good information about the issues involved in creating a community in such an inhospitable location. The author also covers the plants and animals near the base as well as a unique set of quartz crystal deposits located in the area.Alert, Beyond the Inuit lands: the story of Canadian Forces Station Alert Overview
