The Professionals ReviewAfter graduating from college, Pender, Marie, Sawyer, and Mouse cannot find good paying jobs they like. To make money, they decide to move from city to city kidnapping rich men and ransoming them for reasonable sums of money. They frequently remind themselves to behave as professionals. Everything goes smoothly for two years, then, perhaps inevitably, they make a very big mistake. Suddenly, local, state and federal law enforcement officers and Mob hit men are after them. Can the entrepreneurial bunch run and hide from these focused professionals? Owen Laukkanen's first novel, "The Professionals", provides a fast-paced answer.
Laukkanen creates interesting, for the most part likeable, kidnappers and federal agents. One of the hit men is even a bit sympathetic. He manages this by giving readers glimpses into their thought processes and relationships, and, at least in the case of the kidnappers, not dwelling on any trauma those they abduct may have suffered. The college graduates are just smart kids who are fairly decent to the people they abduct, people just trying to make enough money to end up comfortable in a bad job market. The hostages are, for the most part, fairly unsympathetic rich guys -- a popular role in the current economy. Kirk Stevens, of the Minnesota State Police, who is co-opted by the FBI to join the hunt for the kidnappers, is a nice family guy caught up in the thrill of the chase. He is partnered with the beautiful, and hard to read, Agent Windermere, who also thrives on the pursuit of the villains, although neither are without compassion.
Laukkanen writes well, his premise is interesting, and the novel moves along quickly. A smooth, although not overly deep, piece of work.
