Paras Versus the Reich: Canada's Paratroopers at War, 1942-1945 ReviewCanada's contribution to WW2 airborne forces was the rather under-sized 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, which saw action primarily in Normandy and Germany. Its history is ably traced here, from the painful beginnings (plagued by troubles with Canada's fiendishly complex internal politics and feckless political establishment), difficult and lengthy training period (lack of equipment and facilities meant that, eventually, the battalion had to integrate soldiers trained in two quite different schools, British and American), and eventual successful deployment in battle.
The Canadian paratroopers acquitted themselves well in combat, first in Normandy, where they were dropped with the British 6 Airborne Div to protect the left flank of the British 1st Corps; then in a minor line infantry role during the Ardennes campaign in December 1944-January 1945; again in their proper airborne function during Operation Varsity; and, finally, as advanced guard during the race to the Baltic in the last weeks of the war.
The authors strike a very good balance between military minutiae and readability; as a result, the general reader as well as the military history buff should find it worth their while. But, while the former will appreciate the care of putting the Canadian experience within the context of contemporary airborne doctrine and developments, the latter will, perhaps, be left wishing for more technical details -- eg, what exactly was the difference between the British X-type (which even American-trained Canadians preferred) and the American T-4 parachutes?
There are, however, some shortcomings. Although quite a few sketches and posters are included, there are no photographs; more importantly, the maps -- a crucial element for any military text -- are inferior and included as an appendix, rather than in the relevant sections of the text.
