The Lost Mine Murders (Klondike Era Mysteries) ReviewI read Sharon Rowse's first mystery, Silk Train, shortly after it was released in 2007 and enjoyed it so thoroughly on so many different levels. As a former Yukoner, I found her descriptions of the bone biting cold and the conditions in which those who sought gold in '98 survived, so accurate that they made me shiver. The smart banter between two of her primary characters, the refined Granville and the roustabout Scott, was a treat to read. Her young heroine Emily, who has a true mind of her own and pushes against illogical Victorian conventions, is truly someone whose independence you cheer on and whose growing pains you knowingly smile at! I found Rowse's depictions of some of the different lives lived by various women in a "frontier" town during the last years of the reign of Queen Victoria to be fascinating and I was especially moved by her depiction of the fate of certain of those women who found themselves denizens of the infamous opium dens of Vancouver. As a result, I was very eagerly awaiting the sequel to Silk Train to see what Granville, Scott, Emily and their friends...and enemies...would turn to next. Well, she delivered in spades! It was such a pleasure to be able to watch Rowse's characters develop more thoroughly in front of my eyes and to see the new layers of their personalities and the deepening of their relationships with each other. Oh, and did I fail to mention - What a ride! From the moment I downloaded the book on my Iphone, and began to read the first page, the characters and I were off again on another adventure or two...or three! What refreshing and wonderfully non-self indulgent characters! Rowse keeps you guessing in this whodunit right to the end! I hope that volume 3 is just around the corner as, among many other things, I'm really enjoying watching Emily grow up!The Lost Mine Murders (Klondike Era Mysteries) OverviewBook Description:An infant sold into slavery.
