Spinward Fringe Broadcast 1: Resurrection ReviewSpinward Fringe is easily the most addictive series I've read in a while, and that's actually saying something. With the the rising popularity of ebooks, we've seen a number of truly brilliant authors emerge from relative obscurity. Randolph Lalonde has set before us an epic space adventure and delivered it at a frenzied pace, which serves only to stress the suspense. While the basic outline of the concept is the time-honored tale of the good-hearted privateers off to save the world, the plot is fresh and unique. There are differences with each of the main characters, and each with their own motivation. The subterfuge is presented in a way as to be plausible, while still heroic enough that this reader has found himself on the verge of cheering outloud more than once. Another impressive aspect of the writing is the introduction and explanation of technology. It should be no suprise that many of us who read sci-fi are technophiles and geeks of every type. Authors often either ignore the technology that makes the feats in their books possible, or go into the minutia ad nausium. Lalonde has struck a brilliant medium by explaining just enough to give us a picture, while not boring us with too many futuristic details. He also introduces most of the details through conversations between the characters in such a way that it really sounds like one technilogical expert discussing something with another, and not just deus ex machina.
Broadcast 0 left us nearly as broken-hearted as the crew of the First Light, and I couldn't wait break open the next in the series. This book really pulls us into Jake's struggle to work through his amnesia and find his missing daughter while holding his crew together. Politics, subterfuge, andventure, and even some romance are all there for the enjoyment of the reader. None of it feels out of place, but rather it weaves together to give the story depth and flavor.
This is an outstanding and highly recomended read to anyone who enjoys a good story.
