Canadian French for Better Travel (Ulysses Phrasebooks) (French Edition) ReviewI am having fun with this Ulysses guide book. I came across it recently at Chapters bookstore on St. Catherine's in Montreal. Clearly this is a niche topic, so it has little competition. It's small enough to fit in almost any pocket for those spare moments when you might want to occupy yourself. The Quebecois word or phrase is highlighted with the standard French and English translation following. There is also some useful commentary.
I am delighted to see "poutine" here. This is a heart-stopping offering well known to Montrealers consisting of french fries, melted cheese bits, and (hang-on) brown gravy! Harvey's hamburger chain has it on their menu, and I have seen it in at least one border town in New York State as well. "Depanneur" is defined in my Webster's New World Pocket French Dictionary as a repairman or roadside mechanic. But in Montreal it identifies a cramped, product-filled, neighborhood convenience store. You may see this word outside the business. At the "dep" you will find grocery items as well as alcohol and tobacco. You'll meet 'the locals' at the depanneur in search of detergent or cigarettes. There is a wonderful example of a depanneur outside Quebec at Orient Beach in St. Martin (NA), although my guess is that the Quebecois term might be a source of surprise. "Epicerie de depannage" is the standard French term for a convenience store. There you will see customers, fresh baguettes under their arms, squeezing by one another as they look over a wide variety of deli, beverage, and household items. This book is useful, entertaining, and presented in an easy-to-like format.Canadian French for Better Travel (Ulysses Phrasebooks) (French Edition) Overview
