The Copperjar System - Your blueprint for financial fitness (Canadian Edition) ReviewWithin a week of reading The Copperjar System, I implemented one of its simple budgeting strategies: at the beginning of each month, put the money you have budgeted in separate envelopes - one for food, one for entertainment, one for clothes, etc. And when there is no more money in the envelope, you can't spend any more for that month. In month one, the food budget was burned through in two weeks. In month three, I expect to be below budget. This strategy has driven a complete shift from credit card and debit card system to a cash only system which gives you a definite pulse on your finances on a daily basis.
The Copperjar System feels different than some of the other personal financial management books. It has been a while since I read the Wealthy Barber, but what I remember is the across-the-board "pay yourself first" formula with 10% of your income going directly to savings each month. The David Bach books focus, among other things, on cutting the fat out of your spending - for example, his trademarked "Latte Factor". The typical financial advisor approach uses a seemingly industry-wide formula for retirement that is no longer realistic and incredibly discouraging.
The Copperjar System feels more like a real and realistic solution to personal finances. Written by a financial advisor and a tax lawyer, this is what I think makes the Copperjar System different:
1. It starts with what is most important to you. First shock: you may be funding lots of things that aren't really important to you. The psychology works - it is easier to make financial changes when you know it is for something you really want or love.
2. It brings critical missing pieces to your success: strategies, exercises and tools for aligning with your spouse or partner on finances. With this fixed, your chances of success are galvanized and you improve your relationship to boot.
3. The Copperjar System isn't all about cutting and saving and all things negatives. There is lots of focus and suggestions on how you can change your situation in a positive way. For example, how you can earn money differently, how you can change some of your cash-eating assets like homes and cottages into cash-producing assets -- or at least cash eaters with less appetite -- etc.
4. The Copperjar System, takes a refreshing new look at retirement that reduces all of that anxiety our financial advisors have created over the years.
The downside: The first section of the book is a bit of a dry read. But don't give up. There are nuggets worth retaining and the rest of the book is much more readable and hands-on.
A recommendation: I suggest you go for the whole enchilada and buy The Copperjar System Workbook at the same time. There isn't sufficient space in the original book to do the exercises at the end of each chapter and you will want to do them right away, while you are inspired. The Copperjar System - Your blueprint for financial fitness (Canadian Edition) Overview
