He's also interested in an in-depth study of working class culture and institutions during a crucial time in Canada's development - the transition to a full-blown industrial state. It's an ambitious set of tasks and he makes a very good run at it. The use of sources is excellent, with a day-by-day reading of the popular press as foundational. The weakest area is his understanding of the role of working class institutions - the friendly societies and churches, and the cultural aspects of the story.
