Encyclopedia of Canadian Fishes ReviewAlthough we have a few other Canadian fish "bibles", covering freshwater fishes (Scott and Crossman) and Atlantic marine fishes (Scott and Scott), no other text covers Canadian fishes from Lake Erie to Lake Hazen, from Vancouver to Newfoundland. The book's only difficulty is its organization by alphabetically by common name. Since single species often have multiple common names, this can slow down the process of finding what you are looking for. Luckily, a cross-reference of common and scientific names at the back of the text will lead you to what you are looking for, it just takes a little more time. This is a great text for finding out basic information on the names, biology, distribution, characters, and biology of more than 1100 Canadian freshwater and marine fishes. There is also basic angling information for sportfish species. Of course, identification keys for this number of species could not be included in a text that is already hefty... at almost 1000 pages, so the identification of completely unknown specimens can be a bit difficult. However, if you can narrow it down to family, there are family species lists under the family common name. You can go species by species from there and identify your specimen by elimination.
