We Lead Others Follow: First Canadian Division, 1914 - 1918 ReviewBefore World War I the Canadians had virtually no army. They had fought in a few wars, mostly against Indians but also prepared for a defensive fight against the Americans if the had invaded during the war of 1812. In the Boar war, soldiers were provided, but they served under British officers.
In World War I things began to change. Four Canadian divisions served in the Canadian Corp (one of 23 corps). These soldiers for the first time had their own commanding officers.
This book is about the wartime experiences of the First Canadian Division. But unlike many such divisional histories which are a list of the places and battles where the dividion served, this book covers a lot of the training, procedures, people, equipment, etc. that made the division what it was.
As you read this book, keep in mind that the dividion was made inactive after WW I, but re-activated for WW II. It fought in Sicily, then Italy, before finishing the war in the Netherlands with First Canadian Army.
