However, it isn't boring or a tough go either! Florence Carlyle (1864-1923) was a woman of strong determination who chose to remain single so she could pursue her life as an artist. In her time, she received recognition...paintings hung "on the line" in the Paris Salon, purchase by the National Gallery, success in New York in commercial art, many mentions in the media and a high regard by critics, public and colleagues. However, since then, most women artists have been "erased" from Canadian art history so this book helps fill that gap.Her commissioned portrait of Lady Drummond hung in the Canadian War Memorials Exhibition between two paintings by F.H. Varley, yet her name is little known today.Butlin sums up Carlyle's life with"From the perspective of Canadian women's history, a significant part of the value of Carlyle's career as artist lies in her management of her professional practice. At a time when there was enormous pressure on women to conform to traditional social expectations, she showed that, instead of becoming a casualty of gender restrictions, a woman could act incisively and innovatively to succeed in her chosen career."
