The Canadian Submarine Service in Review ReviewThis book does an excellent job of showing the history of Submarines in Canada.Canada has never gotten away from the concept of beinga colony of England and this has been particularly evident in all things Military.Even though Canada has huge coastlines, the Government has never really come to terms with defending it.For all intents and purposes Canada lagged woefully behind other coastal countries in submarine warfare in WWI and even during WWII she did not have any submarines of her own.During WWII there was a substantial presence of enemy submarines in Canada East Coast waters;having entered Halifax Harbor,St.John's Harbor ,The St. Lawrence Straight and The Bay of Fundy. As a matter of fact ,much of Canada's Naval effort was run from the British Admilatry. This continued even through the Cold War.In most military matters ,the Colonial mentality resulted in looking towards England in their military thinking and equipment and definately away from the United States. Coincident with this ,Canadian military forces were often put under British control and treated as Colonists. The Canadian Government as well as most Canadians have never really faced the issue of defending itself, often ended up buying obsolete armanents from others(usually Britain).Surprisingly, this has never really affected the men and women who have joined up and fought for their country, even when their weapons were far below the best.
The Canadian Military has been a political football for a long, long time..A good example was during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when Canada sent an Aircraft Carrier to help. A great debate over what to rearm this handed down carrier with was raging as to whether it should be equipped with available American guns or to wait for British guns that still hadn't gotten off the drawing boards. As a result she sailed without guns to attack or even to defend herself.
In recent conflicts,Canada has continued to come up short;maybe not in the area of great personnel but in equipment. Planes with communication systems so inadequate they couldn't join up with others.Helicopters that are frought with problems and their replacement becoming a political football, trained troops who had to look elsewhere for transportation to the theatre of operations, troops sent to fight in the desert with inappropriate battle dress.,and on and on.
At the time this book was written,we see where Canada has continued down this same path. The state-of-the Art in submarines is Nuclear boats with Nuclear weapons. So what does Canada do? We buy obsolete(1983 design),boats that Britain gave up on after only 2 years, that had been mothballed ,and without state- of- the -art systems and armanents. I guess the government felt it was the cheapest(time will tell) thing they could do and be able to say they had a submarine fleet. One has to wonder, brave and talented though their crews might be,; what chance would they have in any conflict. After all, there is no other purpose of a war weapon than to fight and win.
It seems Canada has opted for some dreamy -eyed idea that its Military is some sort of a police force.
You have to have great admiration for the brave men and women who have in the past, and will in the future, join to defend their country, but they deserve much better weapons and a government that understands the purpose of its Military force. The Canadian Submarine Service in Review Overview
