Just a Larger Family: Letters of Marie Williamson from the Canadian Home Front,1940–1944 (Life Writing) ReviewA rather unusual book, dealing with the experience of a Canadian mother who has taken in two (of three)English boys as evacuees during WWII in the form of letters to their mother in England. The letters are full of interesting domestic detail giving a very full picture of life in Toronto during these years, not excluding some of the hardships, which may come as something of a surprise to Britons.(It is of an eye-opener to hear of the rationing of fuel and other necessities in Canada at this time.) Many sacrifices had to made by the host family who went to great lengths to make the youngsters feel comfortable in their new by unfamiliar home.Given the circumstamces of separation, in many ways a poignant book with a quite scholarly foreword on the background to evacuation and the war.
