Eugenics and the Firewall: Why Alberta’s UFA/Social Credit Legacy Matters to 21st Century Canadians ReviewEugenics and the Firewall is about the application of Darwinian eugenics in Canada in a failed attempt to improve the population by sterization of those deemed racially or genetically inferior. I am very aware of the literature in this area but have rarely come across the use of eugenics to mold the population in Canada. The US, Russia, Germany, Sweden, South America yes, but not Canada I thought. Between 1928 and 1972 (yes 1972, this is not a typo) close to 3,000 persons, both male and female, were sterilized and even experimented on without their consent in Alberta alone. Some were given dangerous experimental drugs to determine the drugs side effects, all without their permission or even knowledge. It reminds me of Tuskegee syphilis experiments in the US in which many victims of the disease were allowed to die for what turned out to be useless scientific "research." These 3,000 persons in Canada were lied to in order to sterilize them and they were not told what the real purpose of the surgery was. It turns out no small number of the those deemed inferior were very normal, some married and tried to have a family, and it was only then that they found out what happened. The author provides much background on the reasoning behind the eugenics movement and why its many supporters saw it as the solution, or at least a major part of the solution, to the problems of society. This meticulously researched, well documented, book tells the tragic story of these forgotten victims and adds to the growing literature about the enormous harm of the eugenics movement.Eugenics and the Firewall: Why Alberta’s UFA/Social Credit Legacy Matters to 21st Century Canadians Overview
