Tip of the Spear: An Intimate Account of 1 Canadian Parachute Battalion, 1942-1945: A Pictorial History ReviewThis is the pictorial companion to Paras Versus the Reich, the history the First Canadian Parachute battalion. It is difficult to see why they were published separately; I see no good reason why they were not published as a single volume, as, for instance, was The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps: An Illustrated History.
But both volumes are well written and informative. Yet they do have a few shortcomings.
First, and most important, is the lack of good quality maps. There can be no excuse for omitting them from a military history publication.
Furthermore, the authors have a tendency to quote a little too copiously from contemporary magazines, such as "Khaki", or from circumstantial letters or addresses. Given the war and the usual character of such material, it can hardly be expected to be anything but laudatory, regardless of the authors' actual opinion.
Finally, there is a lack of critical assessment of the paratroopers' training and equipment, and there is not a word of criticism from the paratroopers themselves. If the Canadian paratroopers found their equipment well-designed and their training entirely well-suited to combat condition, they must have been the first soldiers in recorded history to have done so; for to complain of poor equipment and bad training has been the lot of soldiers since soldiers were invented.Tip of the Spear: An Intimate Account of 1 Canadian Parachute Battalion, 1942-1945: A Pictorial History Overview
