Best o'luck: how a fighting Canadian won the thanks of Britain's king ReviewAlexander McClintock of Kentucky joined the Canadian army before the U.S. entered the war, and fought in the trenches of the Western Front. Mud, frequent bombardment, death, "over the top" charges, rifles and hand grenades, bayonetting Germans, all with "stiff upper lip", and incredible luck until at last a serious wound. Alexander survived when his comrades all around him did not.
This is a rousing good adventure without much pondering the meaning of it all, or sickening details about the carnage and waste. For the first time I learned some of the insights into survival, sniping, throwing hand grenades (not like a baseball), rolling barrages, etc.
