His riveting accounts of these men sweep the reader along to witness the harrowing days of the airwar in Europe, where broken men and broken planes were the norm. His stories are those of men who were survivors, whether carrying on despite their devastating injuries, hiding from the enemy with the help of the Resistance, or trying to fly crippled planes back to the safe haven of England. Some men were taken prisoner, some made it home, and many others remained resting in foreign cemeteries, destined to be eternally young. The common thread amongst them was their love of country, determination to defeat a German tyrant and their comradeship with their crews, who became their families. They experienced the crashing of their planes and the deaths of their friends, which left an indelible mark on their collective psyche. But many returned home, picked up where they left off and led productive lives, often never speaking of their experiences. Ian Darling has spoken for them, and in doing so, has crafted a fitting tribute to the men who would never call themselves heroes. Nicely done, and a book that is long overdue.
