A Spy's Wife: The Moscow Memoirs of a Canadian who Witnessed the end of the Cold War ReviewMs. Cowan is a journalist, a writer of children's novels, and was a spy in the Soviet Union just before it's collapse. Her life as a spy was due to her husband being in the Canadian military and assigned as a military attache to Moscow. Ms. Cowan went with him, but before she went she was given training as a spy in Canada and in the United States.
Inadvertantly she picked an excellent time to go. She was there during the coup against Gorbachev in 1991 and the attempted coup against Yeltsin in 1993. She watched the collapse of the arch enemy of the west from the inside. She was able to travel about the now freed country and able to report on how the old Soviet Government and the Red Army attempted to 'win the hearts and minds' of the breakaway republics.
The closing paragraphs of the book are exceptionally good. She was offered a job where she needed a clearance. No problem, after working in Moscow.... But the Canadian military said that they had no record of her at all. She then says 'If there was no record of me ever being a spy ...then I could write a book -- about all the exciting things that never really happened.'
She's a good writer, and it's a great read.A Spy's Wife: The Moscow Memoirs of a Canadian who Witnessed the end of the Cold War Overview
