Popular Day Hikes 2: Canadian Rockies (No. 2) ReviewThis book is a nice introduction to many popular trails in the Canadian Rockies. The book describes 37 trails from Banff and Kootenay National Parks north to Jasper National Park. Of necessity, the number of trails described for any park or area (e.g., Lake Louise, Icefields Parkway) is small. That the trails are "popular" means they might be busier than most. Even so, there is a good selection of short and long, easy and more difficult, so you are likely to see fewer hikers on the longer and more difficult trails.
Each trail description contains basic information on the distance, height gain, an indication of the difficulty level, and sometimes the best time to hike for waterfalls or other scenic items. Following the summary information are detailed directions for getting to the trailhead and a bit more info on the difficulty of the trail. Next come several numbered points describing highlights of the trail. Each trail has its own topo map (not really good enough to use on the trail, but useful in choosing which trails to attempt). These are pretty standard features, but what really makes this book stand out are the several color pictures from each trail. The color pictures really "sell" some of the trails.
Although I would have preferred a book containing more trails, my only real complaint was that the distances and heights were only in kilometers and meters. It's easy enough to convert to miles and feet, but most other trail guides list both sets of units.
On the whole I really liked this book as a supplement to a more comprehensive trail guide.Popular Day Hikes 2: Canadian Rockies (No. 2) Overview
