Norman Bethune (Extraordinary Canadians) ReviewAn outsider who volunteers soon learns their most valuable contribution is often to be quiet or be dead, thus becoming a lasting example of the sacrifice made by those who give up ease and security to support the particular cause.Dr. Norman Bethune fits that description well, as this admirable book aptly shows. After his death, he was praised by Mao Zedong as the great foreigner who showed the Chinese the way to true internationalism. Chairman Mao, from the Long March to the Little Red Book to Mao caps and Dr. Bethune, knew the value of creating vivid but never conflicting images to solidify his authority.
In so doing, Mao restored the pride and confidence of China. Without Mao, China might still be a broken society similar to the Bangladesh-India-Pakistan-Kashmir-Afghanistan imbroglio. When Dr. Bethune arrived, China wasn't even united against the Japanese invasion; Mao made Dr. Bethune into one of the symbols of the faith China needed to regain in itself.
A century ago, Canada sent hundreds of missionaries and others to China. Canadian children were told, "clean your plate, just think of how some Chinese child would appreciate a meal such as yours." Dr. Bethune, with his Presbyterian heritage which morphed into communist ideology, became one such volunteer-to-China.
He was brilliant, irascible, selfless and dedicated to an idea that lives today in Canada -- health is a public issue, not a matter of private wealth and privilege. Clarkson credits him during his service in the Spanish Civil War with the basic idea of supplying whole blood to injured troops at the front, because many died from loss of blood before arriving at rear aid stations.
In Canada, he was 50 years ahead of his times. In Spain, he changed the nature of thinking about treating battlefield injuries, a concept now stressed by US and other forces. In China, he showed the faith of outsiders in the Chinese people, a society that now confident and rich enough to invest in Canada, the US and throughout the world.
Dr. Bethune was on the right side of the right issues at the right time, even though much of the world was enthusiastically plunging into an easy embrace of authoritarian heritage, discipline and social order. Had he lived, he would have become a thorn in Mao's side; in death, he became an icon of all that Mao wanted to convey.
It's a masterful book which explains a unique Canadian, one in a series of 18 delightful books based on the idea that Canada exists for a logical, legitimate and Liberal purpose. The other half of Canadian logic has yet to be written.Norman Bethune (Extraordinary Canadians) Overview
