Chicken Soup for the Soul: O Canada: 101 Heartwarming and Inspiring Stories by and for Canadians (Chicken Soup for the Soul (Quality Paper)) ReviewIn a book review, Abe Lincoln once wrote: "If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like." If you are a Canadian who huddles as close to the U.S. border as possible - or live in the US - then you're going to love this book. But, if you live in Moose Factory and pick it up at the Hudson's Bay store, you're probably going to puke. Even in Sudbury - home town of Alex Trebek - you're pushing your luck. Who am I to judge?
My arrival in Sarnia almost coincided with the album release of "Did She Mention My Name" by Gordon Lightfoot. I wrote home that those Toronto pigeons lacking a high school diploma were were working towards their GEDs. The third car of each subway was reserved for free open heart surgery. But when I arrived at Lakehead University to complete my masters' degree, Thunder Bay was hosting the annual International Fur Trappers Convention. Whoa! Where the hell am I? It took a few books by Farley Mowat to provide the answer. I needed a winch on the front of my 4WD Scout, and a rack for a canoe silently to transit Quetico Park. I took Canadian citizenship - not abandoning my American - and have been a dual for 38 years. I am able to assess my homeland and my adopted land.
Without major difficulty, I could find 101 stories by Canadians from Corner Brook to Nanaimo which would make your hair stand on end - documenting abuse of power against citizens by governments and all branches of law enforcement. Canada's Bill of Rights is a paper tiger. The geography, alone, divides and conquers the Canadian populace. Much of this book makes reference to Hockey. I came to feel that watching hockey is like obediently looking into the theater's wings, while the magician center stage makes a fool of you. Please test these opinions while seated in a library and skimming the book.
