Fragments of Yesteryear Review...and that's really a shame, because old-time country music is such a niche market/hobby that it could truly benefit from some intelligent and scholarly analysis every now and then, simply to keep people aware of its cultural value.
While Mr. Morrit's heart is likely in the right place, the textual flow of his writing was a tad too amateurish for my liking - this fact is compounded by the numerous errors throughout; double-spaces in sentences, odd capitalization or use of lowercase words, and (what looks to me) a lot of unnecessary comma use. I'm currently a senior English major, but errors like these should have been stamped out in high school; it's just surprising to see a musicologist's work full of quote-unquote 'simple mistakes' in the writing. This book truly could have benefited from a good copy-editor.
For a similar text on early country music, check out Tony Russell's "Country Music Originals," which is a tad more encyclopedic than this work, but also an easy read to skim through, and it contains many of the artists mentioned here, if not more, PLUS a very adequate discography so you can discover the artists' works on some quality CD reissues.
If you are interested in the origins of songs, check out the Mudcat Cafe via Google; a forum board that carries a large database of searchable song titles. It's a very informative website for the study of early American/folk music, recorded or otherwise.
As for this book? At over $50 to purchase (I assume things were handled by a small-scale publisher), it seems ridiculous to see the amount of syntax/grammar errors. Be aware that these may detract from your enjoyment as they did mine. I will be returning this one for a refund, unfortunately.
