Winter Kill: War With China Has Already Begun ReviewGene Skellig's "Winter Kill" describes World War Three on two levels - one from a global perspective, when a power-hungry Chinese general takes control and sends the missiles flying. The other perspective is that of a Canadian ex-military officer and his painstaking preparations in western Canada for such a world cataclysm."Winter Kill" recalls General Sir John Hackett's 1985 book "The Third World War," in which a limited nuclear war scenario results in the bombing of Birmingham and Minsk before the cessation of hostilities. In Skellig's update, the huge nuclear arsenals of the West, China, Russia and India combine to make the Cold War threat of Hackett's book seem comparatively benign. When war starts, it is as if the genie is let out of the bottle and an orgy of nuclear destruction is unleashed upon the earth.
The parallel story of "Winter Kill" chronicles the efforts of a prescient Casey Callaghan who, fully anticipating such a war, builds a complex on Vancouver Island strong enough to protect himself, his family and friends from a nuclear war. Callaghan's preparations are minutely detailed, from the financing and planning to the construction and arming of his stronghold. He brings his family and other members of his group into his building not a moment too soon, as a nuclear attack takes place on Vancouver and the West Coast - and is chillingly chronicled. There is suspense and action as his group, surviving the initial attack, carries on to battle marauders in the British Columbia forest, and struggles to maintain morale with the oncoming of nuclear winter. Meanwhile, the surviving forces of the world strive to locate the Chinese madman, and to save what is left of civilization.
Throughout the book I was impressed with the level of Skellig's research. In his hero's preparations one can almost see a "how-to" in creating a way to survive nuclear war; the details are almost staggering. But in the face of such a wealth of technical detail, Skellig succeeds in crafting a very readable book. The trajectory of his narrative is irresistible; once hooked the reader cannot turn away. We turn each page as the story keeps striking a little closer to home - this is what could happen to us. And Skellig makes it all too awfully, horrifyingly plausible. At the end, what are we left with? Should we try to build a shelter like Casey Callaghan? Or should we become more politically active and try to influence our leaders? "Winter Kill" leaves us with no easy answers - only the cold, hard facts of an alternate future that hopefully, we can avoid.Winter Kill: War With China Has Already Begun Overview
