The Real Smart IRA and Guide to Alternative Investments ReviewFor what could have been a complex set of topics, the author presented the subject matter in a well written and easily understood manner. Unlike other books I've read on investing, I was able to get through the chapters with no trouble and come away with insight. The chapter on retirement accounts, could have been tedious, but was not bad and even helped with my company 401(k). The retirement accounts chapter is a good reference too. The ideas presented have already helped me re-evaluate my current investments, and pursue new ones that I did not know existed. The chapters on gold, currencies and Swiss annuities were especially enlightening. With all the recent bad news about the government debt crisis, the economy and how fast things are changing, I thought the information in the book was very timely. There is a lot of emphasis on inflation and the need to balance portfolios by holding tangible investments which should keep pace with inflation. The author provided some great ETF investments to get "hard asset" exposure that I was able to implement quickly, without having to learn about futures markets. I already knew a little about real estate investing and self-directed IRAs, but the discussion took me to another level. The book opened my eyes to inflation, retirement account investing, real estate, commodities, gold and Swiss annuities.
